This post is about the importance of Link Building. If you don’t already know Link Building is the process of getting other people to link to your website. It is incredibly important because links generate visitors to your website and help your site rank higher in Google.

From 10 to 100

I was about to write a blog post last week about how important link building was, because after gaining a particular link my web traffic jumped from an average of 10 visitors a day to 100. That’s a 10 fold increase! From One link.

From 100 to 1000

Well I’m glad I didn’t get time to write that post because my site traffic has now increased from 100 visitors a day to 1000. From the same link! The initial jump in traffic seen in the graph above is now dwarfed by a second jump in traffic.

But, as someone once said “My overnight success took about 20 years”. Although this one link had such an impact it was only one of about 500 I’ve got into my website over the last 3 months.

A big factor in the increased traffic was Twitter. I’ve been a big naysayer about social media, doubting the results you get over the work you have to put in. However the jump from 100 visitors to 1000 was owed to a single Tweet by a very popular user account @smashingmag who currently has 376,490 followers.

Every Silver Lining Has a Cloud

The downside is that all of this traffic is from a technical audience who are only interested in the PieTimer jQuery Plugin I wrote. None of these visitors will be interested in buying from me because they are all web designers themselves.

The Good News

Google have confirmed that Twitter links have a direct impact on search rankings even thought they are tagged as nofollow. Given that the link has now been ReTweeted about 50 times so far it should give me a good boost in the search rankings.

Also Google puts a lot of emphasis on how “trustworthy” a site is, and seeing a lot of people tweeting about my website will help increase Trustworthiness.

Differing shower gel designs

These two products are the same. They both do the same thing. They are both from the same company and they’re in identically shaped bottles.

But there are several differences, because, one is aimed at men and one at women.

The design aimed at women uses feminine colours, the words “softly” and “moisturising”, hearts on the bottle, the natural ingredients jojoba milk and vitamin e.

From the men’s design, note the more masculine dark colours, the words “purify” (because obviously men have been up to things that they need purifying from), the sharp lines, and the ingredients Sea Minerals and Zinc. And let’s not forget the massive words “For MEN” plastered across the front.

Even the typography is carefully aimed, the woman’s product having mostly all lowercase, less in your face, words. Whereas the Men’s is ALL IN CAPITALS because we don’t mince our words, DO WE?

Once you start to look at these design elements they seem almost comical and caricatured. But they are there for a very important reason. They work.

They work because Men and Women are different and they buy things for different reasons. Even the same product has to be sold completely differently.

How this can help you.

Don’t worry, I’m slowly getting to the point. Believe it or not this has a lot to do with web design AND how you promote your business.

You probably promote your business the same way to everyone. You may tweak your presentation style based on the client you’re talking to at the time but how many versions of your brochure do you have? How many versions of your website do you have?

Landing Pages

The good news is it’s easy to target different customers using your website. For example my homepage is fairly generic but I target customers looking for certain products by using specially designed landing pages like this one for WordPress Websites made in Oxford. Here, I am specifically targeting people in Oxford looking for a WordPress website design. This is specific and has the added benefit of capturing Search Engine traffic for those keywords as well.

Take my advice, segment your customers into as many groups as possible and build keyword rich landing pages for every group. It’s a cheap and easy way to send your website traffic through the roof.

I was reading the Wikipedia article on Transcendental Meditation (don’t ask) and found the the TM Organisation‘s logo eerily familiar.

Then I realised it is very similar to the Tesco Mobile logo. What’s more the initials of both are TM! This seems more than a coincidence to me. I suspect a rogue designer having a bit of a joke might be the cause but we may never know.

In my previous post about why you shouldn’t worry too much about the design of your website I included some screenshots of now famous websites whose design wasn’t that great.

Well good news, I’ve stumbled across a whole load more atrocious web design of now famous companies. I hope you enjoy these.

Many times it’s been shown that the difference between success and failure is not how smart you are or how good you are at networking. It’s about doing stuff. If you don’t do stuff, stuff doesn’t get done.
